Wreckless
Eric
Bungalow Hi (Southern Domestic)
*****
(five star rating)
Ever since he surfaced on the Stiff label with a series of punky hit
singles, Wreckless Eric has bloody-mindedly disregarded what most people
would consider the sensible route for a career in the pop industry.
This is the first album since the mid-90s to bear the Wreckless Eric
name and it is a great reminder of just what a wayward genius he is.
In all honesty he still cannot really hold a tune and this is far too
weird to be easy listening, but these partly autobiographical songs
show that he has lost none of his skills as a wordsmith.
The humour, the bite and the passion are still there, as is his colourful
sense of narrative and vivid imagery.
He wrote the songs, plays most of the instruments himself, he recorded
it himself in a home studio, he has released it on his own label, and
it is a triumph.
He is appearing live in Bristol at St Bonaventures on October 11; one
not to miss.
