Eric
Bungalow Hi
by
Charles Holley
The opening of Bungalow Hi sounds as though it's borrrowed from the
first Faust album - the opening track of the see-thru album - with
all its electronics blowing away what we considered 'normal' music.
However some kind of 'normality' returns on track two with 'Same',
a song about Eric of course, a song that's tragic but retains humour
- the black kind. Ever entertaining and skilled at putting catchy little
numbers together out of the bleakest of lyrics, Eric has made yet another
hypnotic album. Not for him any musical conventions as he creates a
lo-fi masterpiece that will be buried in the sludge of 'pop sensibility'.
There's a relationship here with Robert Wyatt, the approach to the
songs, the production with all its odd squeaks and creaks, rattles
and hums that offer the perfect backdrop for his musical genius. Long
live Eric.
